Ok, I’m a little obsessed with Lady Antebellum and am a closet country music fan. There is some phenomenal songwriting and singing going on in country music and there always has been. Last Friday, I had the opportunity to meet Lady Antebellum and see them perform at Radio City. I’d just taken a shower and gotten dressed, made a pizza for dinner, and my friend sends me a text that if I hustle, we can still make a Lady A meet and greet. So, I throw on some makeup, shove the pizza into my purse, and head out the door. I’m moving fast down the street, mentally telling all the tourists strolling by Rockefeller Plaza to step aside! Get out of my way or I may miss Lady A! I’ve got a cd of the song that I want to pitch to them in my pocket, I’m on a mission.

The excitement is building, there’s already a line outside Radio City, and I finally see my friend. The staff hustle us inside and lead us through the backstage of Radio City, which seems like it must go on forever. Everyone is excited and happy and finally Lady A enter the building! Tall drink of water, Charles Kelley, gorgeous Hillary Scott and very cool Dave Haywood. They take a few questions and sing an a capella version of “American Honey”. The staff rounds us up and we all meet the band and take a picture. I say, “Hello, it’s really nice to meet you.”, but I’m thinking, “The next time we meet, we’re going to be writing a song together.” My cd remains firmly in my bag, as I probably would’ve been escorted out if I gave it to them right then. So, now I’m determined to get this song to them and it wouldn’t be the craziest thing if I started writing country music. I love storytelling, great melodies and great singing. It was a really wonderful and fun night and I’ve never seen that many cowboy hats in NYC ever.

Markeisha’s soulful and swaying ballads feature doo wop melodies, jazz interludes, and New York City’s classic, vocal melting pot conjures up images of smoky clubs and timeless lyrics on her latest release, Talk To Me. The gospel-tinged ballads feature classic rhythms and moods that can only be created by Markeisha.

Matheson’s Entertainment Blog:
You may have heard of the fabulous singer named Markeisha Ensley, but if you haven’t you’re missing out. Like Alicia Keys before her, Markeisha is not only a fine singer, she can also play the piano. But as a teacher and an artist as well, this New York-based singer-songwriter has so much to offer. With the style of music that Markeisha creates, it’s only a matter of time before the whole world becomes familiar with this up-and-coming musical artist.
I’m still not really understanding how this happened, but picture this: my Wednesday night SGA songwriter’s group gathered around a dining room table as we do every Wednesday when our gracious host, Ann Ruckert, says, “I hope you can stay a little bit after time tonight because Roberta Flack is on her way over.” Ummm….ok. I guess we could stick around for that. So, Roberta Flack comes in in a rush of hair and aura and divaness, in all her glory and she is surprised to see us all there. But she sits down, so regal, and I swear the air in the room changed. Everybody shut up. What was she going to say?

She talked about Whitney. She got a little emotional. She talked about her new album of Beatles covers. (Her cover of The Long and Winding Road is my favorite!) She talked about her upcoming concerts – at the Kennedy Center in October with the Symphony Orchestra, how traveling to far off lands like Australia and Japan to perform isn’t as easy as it used to be. She spoke about her relationship with her neighbor Yoko and how she heard John Lennon composing Imagine through the apartment walls. Holy @*&^?! How is this happening? Roberta Flack is a legend and we’re all sitting around the dining room table listening to her talk like she’s our favorite aunt sharing stories about life.

To top off this incredible night, our illustrious mentor, Ms. Ruckert, had a couple of us give Ms. Flack our newest CDs. And then Ms. Flack says, “Can you autograph it to me?” WTF. What are you supposed to write on your CD to a MUSICAL ICON? I don’t know, but I’m definitely not going to forget this night for a long time. The night I met a musical goddess and legend…. and got to autograph my CD to her! So grateful and happy!
